HRI Offers $20,000 in Scholarships

APPLICATION MATERIALS ACCEPTED THROUGH SEPTEMBER 13, 2019

The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) is pleased to announce it is accepting scholarship applications for the 2019-2020 school year.

These scholarships are made possible by seven special HRI endowment funds that aid students who are seeking a lifelong career in horticulture. HRI and its donor firms consider graduating students in horticulture to be the lifeblood of the green industry. 

HRI is pleased to offer the following scholarships (applications due September 13, 2019):

  • The Timothy S. and Palmer W. Bigelow Jr. Scholarship (one, $3000 scholarship available)
  • The Usrey Family Scholarship (one, $1000 scholarship available)
  • The Bryan A. Champion Memorial Scholarship (one, $1,000 available)
  • The Susie & Bruce Usrey Scholarship (one, $500 available)
  • The Spring Meadow Scholarship (three, $3500 scholarships available)
  • The “Muggets” Scholarship (one, $1500 scholarship available)
  • The Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship (one, $5000 scholarship available)

A Biological Plot Twist: Can an Adventive Parasitoid Protect Boxwood?

CABI and USDA APHIS are collaborating on the biological control of the box tree moth using parasitoids from Asia. Several parasitoid species are currently under consideration for introduction into North America and Europe. One of these parasitoids arrived in Europe on its own and has begun controlling the moth on both planted trees and in wild boxwood stands. The webinar will describe the spread and impact of this adventive parasitoid in Europe and present efforts to assess the potential of this species and others as biological control agents in North America.

The tool generates clear analyses of profitability, breakeven points, and return on investment, giving growers confidence to evaluate sustainable production practices and new technologies. By linking financial literacy with production decisions, the HortCalculator helps growers balance profitability and sustainability, strengthening resilience in ornamental horticulture systems. The session will highlight practical applications for nursery, greenhouse, and specialty crop operations, while also exploring opportunities for research, education, and industry partnerships to scale the tool across crops and regions.
